Tis the season to celebrate Windsor at Juniper Books, starting with a visit from Spike Bell: award-winning photographer and creator of the book, Memoirs of a Border City.
Memoirs of a Border City, which combines memories of Bell’s experiences in Windsor with the photographs he captured over the course of some five decades, is Bell’s third book, but in keeping with his philosophy on photography the content is anything but repetitive. “Above all,” Bell writes, “one’s approach to pictures must be fresh. Discovering the new and different requires finding excitement in the everyday world and seeing with a true photographer’s eye and mind.”
Bell’s excellence in photography has been recognized in Canada, where he received the Master of Photographic Arts award (the highest honour awarded in recognition of expertise in photography) and in the United States were he was honoured with the Professional Photographers of America certification award and a Master of Photography award. In 2004, Bell was asked to join the prestigious American society of photographers. Seven of Bell’s photographs can also be found in the National Archives in Ottawa, Canada.
Thursday, December 20th is your opportunity to meet the man Marty Gervais described in an article for the Windsor Star as, “[having] a handshake that will crush all the small bones in your hand. He has a smile that will make you feel you’re a close personal friend …[and] a never-ending stream of stories to keep you in rapt attention.” This is, of course, in addition to the “photographs that will knock your socks off.” Spike Bell will be at Juniper Books signing copies of Memoirs of a Border City from 1pm-4pm.
